What's inside

Everything you need to read and write katakana

  • All 46 basic katakana

One letter per page, from ア to ン, in the order you'd learn them (pages 4–59).

  • Stroke order, step by step

Every letter is broken into numbered strokes so you build the right habits from day one.

  • Trace, then write

Practice grids with dashed guide lines and fading letters: trace first, then write on your own.

  • Pronunciation & origins

A "how to say it" note, a memory hint and the kanji each letter comes from.

  • Dakuten & handakuten

    ガ, ザ, ダ, バ and パ: how the two little marks change a sound (pages 60–63).

  • Combinations & modern katakana

Yōon like キャ and シュ, foreign sounds like ファ and ティ, plus small ッ and the long vowel mark ー (pages 64–66).

  • Row reviews & 5 mixed quizzes

A review page after every row, then picture, matching and romaji challenges (pages 67–71).

  • Answer key & certificate

Check your own answers, then fill in the Katakana Hero award when you finish.

Who it's for

  • Learners who know hiraganaReady for the second script? Katakana has the exact same sounds in sharper lines.
  • Kids learning with a parentBig letters, everyday words like コーヒー (coffee) and カメラ (camera), and a certificate to sign at the end.
  • App learners who want handwritingTelling apart シ and ツ, or ソ and ン, is ten times easier once your hand knows the strokes.

How to use it

  1. Say it clearlySay each sound out loud, crisp and short, without dragging the vowel.
  2. Follow the strokesKatakana is angular: the numbers show the order and direction of each line.
  3. Watch the tricky pairsシ (shi) vs ツ (tsu) and ソ (so) vs ン (n) look alike. The stroke direction tells them apart.
  4. Write real wordsTrace, then write loanwords you'll actually see, like ケーキ (cake) and バス (bus).

A little every day beats one long session. Finish a row, do its review page, then move on.

FAQ

Katakana practice sheet questions

Are the katakana practice sheets really free?

Yes. All 74 pages are free. Enter your email to get the download button and a copy of the link, or grab the 9-page sample with no email at all.

Are these katakana tracing worksheets?

Yes. Every letter page has a tracing grid: you write over fading grey guide letters first, then fill the empty boxes on your own. The loanword pages, row reviews and quizzes are worksheets too.

Are these katakana worksheets good for kids?

Yes. They're made for beginners and kids: big letters, one letter per page, everyday words like コーヒー (coffee), and a certificate to sign at the end.

What do you do with my email?

We send you one email with the download link, and that's it. No newsletter and no marketing emails.

Can I print the worksheets?

Yes. Every page is designed to be printed and written on. You can also import the PDF into a tablet note-taking app and write with a stylus.

Is it A4 or US Letter?

The PDF is A4. To print on US Letter, choose "Fit to page" (or "Scale to fit") in your print settings. The pages shrink very slightly and everything stays readable.

Should I learn hiragana before katakana?

Yes, we recommend learning hiragana first. Katakana shares the exact same sound system, so once you know hiragana, katakana takes about half the time to master.

How long does it take to finish?

About 10 minutes a day is plenty. At one or two letters a day, most learners get through the 46 basic letters in a few weeks, then move on to dakuten, combinations and the quizzes.
