Questions about KotoNexa

What is KotoNexa?

KotoNexa is a Japanese vocabulary app built only for JLPT preparation. You study illustrated flashcards for N5 to N1, each with a natural example sentence, furigana you can control, and native audio. A smart review system keeps bringing words back until you have answered them correctly enough times to count as learned.

Is KotoNexa free?

Yes. KotoNexa is completely free: every JLPT level, every sentence, all audio, the community and progress tracking. You only need a free account to start.

Which JLPT levels are covered?

All five levels are ready, with 8,090+ words in total: N5 (713), N4 (651), N3 (2,071), N2 (1,744) and N1 (2,911). Every word includes an example sentence, audio and an illustration.

How is KotoNexa different from other flashcard apps?

Most flashcard apps give you a word and a translation, or ask you to build your own deck. KotoNexa gives you ready-made JLPT decks where every card has a real sentence, furigana you can switch on, off or hide only for your current level, romaji for beginners, a choice of male or female native voice, and an illustration. You also decide how many correct answers it takes to master a word.

Can I choose what to study?

Yes. Pick one or more JLPT levels, then choose topic categories inside each level, or study all words at once. Every category shows how many of its words you have learned, so you always know what's left.

Does KotoNexa use spaced repetition?

KotoNexa uses a mastery-based Smart Review system. Each word moves through stages (New, Started, Improving, Finalizing, Learned) as you answer it. Every daily deck mixes new words with words at each stage, and a word keeps coming back until you have answered it correctly the number of times you chose. Focus modes let you drill only hard words or only words still in progress.

Do I need to know hiragana and katakana first?

It helps, but you can start straight away. KotoNexa includes hiragana and katakana charts, and you can turn on romaji and furigana while you are still learning to read.

Can I see the vocabulary before signing up?

The full word lists, sentences and audio are available inside the app once you create a free account. Sign-up takes under a minute, and you can start your first deck immediately.

Where can I use KotoNexa?

KotoNexa works in any modern browser on desktop and mobile at app.kotonexa.com. A downloadable Android app is coming soon. Your progress is saved to your account.

What is the Community Garden?

It is KotoNexa's built-in community where learners ask vocabulary questions, share progress, post milestones and celebrate rank-ups together, without leaving the app.

How does KotoNexa track my progress?

You set a daily word target and KotoNexa tracks words learned, streaks, a weekly activity chart, your status for every word, and your rank across 13 tiers from Minarai to Kamisama.
