How this quiz works

This is the “Complete the Word” page from our hiragana workbook, turned into a quiz you can replay forever. Each question shows a picture, the romaji and a word with one gap. Choose the hiragana that completes it, and pick up useful first words as you go.

  1. Look at the picture and read the romaji.
  2. Find the gap in the hiragana word.
  3. Tap the letter that completes the word.

About this quiz

Is this quiz good for complete beginners?

Yes, once you've seen most of the 46 hiragana. Every word is a simple everyday word with a picture and romaji, so you're practicing reading, not guessing vocabulary.

Will I get the same questions every time?

No. Each round draws new questions, and your browser remembers which ones you've already seen, so you work through the whole set before anything repeats. Nothing is saved on our side and there's no signup.

Where do the words come from?

They're beginner words from the free KotoNexa hiragana workbook (animals, food, family and places) plus more of the same level, so each round brings new words.
